Tar and Gravel/BUR Retrofit

End roof leaks – cut energy costs for good

Stop patching – spray your tar roof and start saving!

Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) systems provide an enduring solution to the costs and frustration of repeatedly repairing or replacing built-up asphalt or tar-and-gravel roofs. You just need the performance leader in commercial roofing: DFW Urethane. Now serving Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Texas and Oklahoma.

Our sprayed-in-place foam creates a seamless, watertight seal with roof substrates and around all the areas where traditional built-up roofs leak: seams, joints, gaps and overlaps, and around flashings, parapet walls, vents, roof drains, air conditioning units, etc. We can also apply extra foam in low areas to minimize ponding of water.

Cut installation costs and risks

Not only is it a more effective solution, a spray foam retrofit is far less labor-intensive, costly and disruptive than installing a new tar or asphalt roof. SPF roofing can be installed directly over the existing roof, eliminating the hefty costs of removing it and all your rooftop equipment. This also reduces the risks to the building and eliminates the downtime associated with opening the roof. There’s no need to remove, then create a patchwork of, roofing material around the AC units and other equipment.

See lower utility bills and eco-friendly benefits

Sprayed polyurethane foam significantly reduces building energy costs. In addition to the insulating value of the sprayed foam, its white ENERGY STAR® elastomeric coating reduces surface temperatures. Our customers have seen energy savings of 33 percent based on average foam thickness. Depending on the energy efficiency of the AC units and the amount of foam sprayed, it’s possible to achieve even greater savings.

The spray foam also encapsulates the CFCs that are released into the atmosphere by a built-up roof, preventing future damage to the ozone.  And, because only the gravel is removed, not the entire roof, there’s far less waste going into landfills.

How it’s installed

  1. We clear the roof of loose gravel, remove blisters and secure as necessary.
  2. Our experienced technicians spray all roof areas with the desired thickness of polyurethane foam.
  3. We apply a base coat of high-performance elastomeric coating.
  4. If desired, we spray a second coating layer for additional thickness in high-traffic areas.
  5. Finally, we apply a bright white topcoat that carries the ENERGY STAR rating for reflectivity.

When it’s covered with a layer of sprayed-in-place polyurethane foam, and coated with a high-performance elastomeric coating, an existing built-up roof becomes a component of a sustainable waterproofing system. As such, it may also be eligible for LEED certification points.
